Matthew Slack: Driving Innovation in Communications and ICT Across Australia

 

With more than two decades of experience delivering complex communications and ICT infrastructure projects, Matthew Slack has played a significant role in transforming connectivity across Australia. From improving education in remote communities to leading large-scale government, mining, healthcare, and commercial infrastructure programs, his career reflects a commitment to innovation, reliability, and technological excellence.

Revolutionising Remote Education

Following the completion of his service with the Royal Australian Navy in late 1999, Matthew transitioned into the telecommunications industry, where he quickly became involved in projects that would reshape communication across regional Australia.

One of his most significant achievements was serving as the Technical Project Leader for the Satellite School of the Air initiative between 2000 and 2004. The project replaced the traditional high-frequency radio system used to educate children living in Australia's remote regions with a modern satellite-based learning platform.

Matthew led the technical design of the communications solution by modifying the TCP/IP protocol stack to compensate for satellite latency. He also collaborated directly with Microsoft to adapt the first version of Microsoft Conferencing Server, enabling interactive virtual classrooms over satellite connections. This groundbreaking project represented the most significant advancement in remote education since the introduction of two-way radio and laid the foundation for today's online learning environments across the Australian Outback.

Enhancing Government Communications

During the same period, Matthew also served as the Technical Project Leader for the Western Australian State Telecommunications Enhancement Project while working with Optus.

This statewide initiative connected 88 remote police stations, over 30 government facilities, and numerous essential service providers through reliable 24/7 satellite communications. The project dramatically improved emergency response capabilities and strengthened communication networks throughout rural and regional Western Australia, providing dependable connectivity where traditional telecommunications infrastructure was unavailable.

Supporting Remote Indigenous Communities

Matthew's expertise also contributed to the Bushlight Program, an initiative designed to deliver sustainable energy solutions to remote Aboriginal communities throughout Western Australia, the Northern Territory, and South Australia.

Working alongside Murdoch University, he designed and implemented a satellite-based communications system that enabled real-time monitoring and fault reporting for remote power installations. Matthew personally participated in the first successful deployment and field trial at Harts Range in the Northern Territory, demonstrating the practical benefits of combining satellite communications with renewable energy management.

Modernising Western Australia's Grain Industry

In 2004, Matthew accepted the role of Communications Services Manager for Co-operative Bulk Handling (CBH), where he led several major technology transformation projects across Western Australia's grain network.

His accomplishments included delivering one of the world's first large-scale wireless mesh networks across major grain export terminals in Kwinana, Geraldton, and Esperance. He also designed and implemented a statewide Frame Relay communications network that replaced outdated dial-up infrastructure across grain receival sites.

To further modernise operations, Matthew deployed Voice over IP (VoIP) services using Nortel technology and integrated wireless connectivity between weighbridges and sampling facilities using Cisco networking equipment. These improvements significantly enhanced operational efficiency, communications reliability, and business continuity across regional operations.

Delivering Critical Mining Infrastructure

Matthew's experience expanded into Australia's mining sector through major communications and infrastructure projects for Rio Tinto and BHP.

He successfully managed the $11 million Railway Microwave Communications Upgrade for Rio Tinto, coordinating multidisciplinary teams responsible for modernising critical communications infrastructure supporting mining operations.

For BHP, Matthew directed several strategic ICT initiatives, including the Newman Data Centre Migration and Power Upgrade project, as well as the statewide implementation of the company's 1-WAN network. Together, these projects strengthened operational resilience, improved connectivity, and modernised network infrastructure across multiple mining sites.

Transforming Healthcare Technology

Between 2010 and 2016, Matthew became heavily involved in delivering large-scale ICT programs across Western Australia and New South Wales Health.

His leadership contributed to communications and infrastructure programs for major healthcare facilities, including Fiona Stanley Hospital, Perth Children's Hospital, Albany Health Campus, Hedland Health Campus, King Edward Memorial Hospital, and Bunbury Hospital.

Beyond hospital infrastructure, he successfully delivered server virtualisation initiatives, SAN storage deployments, geographically redundant data centre migrations, statewide Oracle Financials billing implementations, SAP warehouse management systems, and governance frameworks that strengthened ICT program delivery across health departments.

Building Smarter Commercial Infrastructure

Matthew also led the design and implementation of advanced Building Management Systems (BMS), ICT infrastructure, and energy management solutions for several landmark Australian developments.

These included Brookfield Place, Perth Arena, 140 William Street, Albany Health Campus, Chevron LNG facilities, and Alcoa's Operations Control Centre. Many of these projects achieved industry-leading sustainability ratings, including 5-Star Green Star certification and high NABERS energy performance standards.
